Winter Rhythm #18
December 1st 2017
Acrylic on Canvas 60.1cm x 60.1cm Exhibition Text Winter Rhythm #18 is a piece heavily inspired by the work of Jackson Pollack. This piece is seen at first as a bunch of squiggles and dots, but just like Pollock's work he didn’t just splatter a ton of paint and call it art. The chooses a certain color choice or pallet and works from it which was exactly what Winter Rhythm was all about. |
Inspiration
How I got inspired to create this piece was through the use of Jackson Pollacks art himself. Back then when Jackson Pollack first created his paintings, they were seen as controversial to the art community. People were disgusted when they seen his work and failed to assume that what Pollack was doing when even considered art. Some of these words that were used to describe his work was either disgusting, or unpleasing to the eye. Although there people who were disgusted by his work, there were some people who actually enjoyed his work. This has allowed a new philosophy on how art is seen which was that art itself does not have to be seen as visually pleasing to the public to be considered art, but rather than be seen as a way how we think of things and determine the overall meaning to the piece is what makes it so interesting. The number one piece that I have took inspiration from the most was Autumn Rhythm. This was the number one thing that has inspired me to create this piece and overall, take the risk as an artist myself.

Planning
There was some planning that was placed to this piece such as the size and the color choices. Some of the thing that I asked myself was; How is this piece going to turn out? How am I going to break the rules? How am I going to implement my own style into this piece other than just simply copying Pollack? These questions have led me to create my planning sketches. Unlike my planning sketches from my other pieces, these sketches focuses more on the shape, as well as the originality that I’m going to place into my piece itself. This was the first time I have ever created a piece that has been tough to create planning sketches for. So what I have done is choose the different styles that I can choose and learn from there. Then after that that was when the piece began to take shape on planning and soon became a reality.

Process
One of the first things I have done is placed a plastic mat around the area I was painting in in order to prevent any sort of mess around the space since this was painted mainly in my bedroom. After that I placed my canvas on to the floor that was already painted with gesso and stretched. Just like Pollack’s work he doesn’t fill the painting first with a coat and exposes the the gesso into his piece. Then in order to implement my own rule or style into the piece, I have placed a piece of painter’s tape to block out small areas from the splats of paint. Another thing that pollack didn’t do is for the first round of splats I have used my paintbrush and flatten them into this mixed blueish-grayish hud that was seen as a background aesthetic at first, but soon turned to a unique style that separates my work from Pollack’s. Then after a while I removed the painters tape and added more layers into the piece using a ton of paintbrushes and paint tubes in order to complete the piece as a whole. One of the many things that Pollack’s was seen from the outside was delusional, but as I was painting from his style and his perspective I could see why he painted things like this. Whenever you feel angry, sad, or even just simply happy. Our bodies think in certain ways on how we see color through art. And by placing this into my pieces itself, this has allows people to see my art as either comfortable to look at or completely disturbing for the human eye. This is what Pollack was doing all along.

Reflection
Overall I have felt like that I have done a great job on implementing my own style on what seems to be seen as a rather complicated piece. As the artist I am, I am completely aware on what this piece is seen as to the public as “a bunch of squiggles” or something that people claim to say an insult to the art community. The truth is Art was never meant to be seen as pleasing in the first place. One of these examples can include another piece made my another artist known as Piss Christ. This piece was controversial because of the fact that the artist took a holy cross placed it into a jar and urinated in it which was an insult to the Christian or Catholic religion. Creating controversial art is the reason why artists are so well known. This is the exact reasons why Jackson Pollack is famous for his artwork today

Connection to ACT
Clearly explain how you are able to identify the cause-effect relationships between your inspiration and its effect upon your artwork?
I was able to clearly explain this idea through the use of color pallete and the the mood that this piece gives in order to empathize a strong feeling on what this piece is conveying. This is something very similar on how Salvador Dali was able to express his piece through surrealism as well.
What is the overall approach (pov) the author (from research) has regarding the topic of your inspiration?
The overall approach to this piece was to relate to Salvador Dali's piece based off his childhood which was dark enough since he has went through tough times by noticing his brother died before he was born, and his pieces express his feelings towards things in society and in other places, while for me I'm empathizing the idea of the future of this world and the many problems that have long term affects on us.
What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, cultures, etc. while you researched your inspiration?
The overall generalization that I have found in this piece is related to the problems we face today such as the risk of Nuclear War, climate change leading into harsh natural disasters, and even the environment in general is completely destroyed by these factors thus leaving nothing, but a blank space of emptiness around us.
What was the central idea or theme around your inspirational research?
The general idea of this piece is death and destruction, and the many long terms events that we face today that could possibly end the human race of tomorrow. Also many people will say that the future will be great with all of these technological advances, but with all the things going on in the world today, there won't be a tomorrow to look forward to
What kind of inferences did you make while reading your research?
The inferences that I have made was that Salvador Dali had a rough life and with these many factors affecting him, these have lead up to the causes that have affected his life into his paintings.
