"The Urban Artist"
Exhibition Text
In this painting I've decided to talk mainly about my feelings as a young artist in a urban city full of color, but some times dull and depressing. I express these feelings with blacks and whites interfering with bright and vivid colors just splashing right at the viewer and then finishing it off with sad colorless feelings at the end thus displaying my meaning in three parts where I can share my feellings about me and the world just by a glance and putting it into a style that feels and represents urban culture.

Inspiration
Inspiration
When I was younger I always had a passion towards art, when I got older I got into more urban culture and soon artists themselves have consider themselves as "rebels". The art style that will help me gain that style was Andy Warhol's other form of pop art mixed in with the rebel like hidden messages of Barbara Kruger which have been mix together as one art style which can used as a urban art style that can be bright and colorful but display a hidden message as well. With these two artist, I started planning out my stories that I could display on the panels that can describe me as a person, and my life as a whole. |
Planning
Planning Sketches
Because of the main design of the piece I made alot of similar sketches on purpose in order to help out come up with a similar story or background of what I am trying to explain to the people who look and make them say "Oh I see how he wanted to show this" or "I can really see how he feels about being an artist". This is shown in a set of 3 vertical canvases for each sketch which can set the total of 3 sets of sketches in order to help explain on how I am going to do this. With these sketches I managed Experimentation When I was experimenting with this artwork I learned a new technique due to the technical difficulties I have encountered when transferring my sketches to my portrait which was the projector breaking due to someone else mishaps. So my only solution to this problem was to make a grid and recreate the grid transfer from freshman year which has helped a lot due to the fact that It helped my self portrait part of the piece feel much more porportional |
Process
When it came to planning on how to do this, I had to make my drawing first, then place it on the projector just like my self portrait, but one of the main problems that I had to face was that someone else who was using the projector last time, broke the lightbulb which had resulted me using a different accurate method which was the grid method that I have learned in freshman year with the early grid drawings. At first, I strongly disliked the grid drawings due to the fact that most of my drawings ended up inaccurate which has led them to be very wonky, and misshapen drawings in the end, but at a time like this where I am stuck in a situation where I have nothing to transfer my drawings into, I had to do the grid method in which this time I managed to successfully transfer the drawing in the most accurate way in which I have ever done.
Reflection
Overall I have felt that I have done a much more cleaner job at creating this by layers, compared to what I did originally with my self portrait which was one of my first paintings that I created. As continued to move between the 2nd and 3rd one. I have created plenty of detail when it comes to understanding the main point of the piece itself. I have discovered new ways to creating detail, one of these examples include how I tried a new technique that created the shine in the water from the bright moonlight with the stars in the sky. Overall this is my favorite piece when it comes to painting so far.

Meaning
The main meaning of this piece is to describe a story, this isn't just any other story like a fairy tales or any fictional being. This is a story that explains the reason why I became the person that many people see as shy, quiet, and introverted person.
I have always been a creative person, ever since I was little and started drawing pictures of cities, cars, and even little road signs that at the time I didn't understand what they were there for. I just knew that they were very colorful and bright and fun to look at. As I got older, just like the rest of us I soon realized the meaning of urban culture, which is quite different for some parts of my family who were born and raised in a countryside. This made me define myself as an urban artist, but due to the horrifying events of my childhood of being bullied my multiple classmates for my creativity and different personality, and constantly meeting and losing friends in a short time period, I have felt that I truly met someone that I can relate with thus making me more of an introvert. Being an introvert can be quite hard to overcome. Ever since my childhood, I felt that I can't trust people or other peers in general, which can make me nervous around big groups or even worst such as oral presentations. During my oral persentations, no matter how much I practice, I could never be able to deliver a speech that is perfect because of this unnecessary fear making me loose focus, repeat things, and stutter when I feel like I'm placed under the spotlight.
