"Unveiled Myth"Block Print
Medium: Linoleum & Printing Ink 12 x 8 in. October 7th 2016 Exhibition Text
"Unveiled Myth" is an art piece that was mainly inspired by a mix of German Expressionism, Impressionism, and a little bit of Surrealism. With all of these mixed together I have decided to even take it further with more inspirations of myths and urban legends. There are some things that people say are real but when they try to prove with photographic evidence, it almost seems blurred, washed out, and low quality with fuzzy corners. This is where the start of my piece took place. |
Planning
Inspiration
During the course of this project, I was looking for a lot of inspiration towards what I'm making. I was talking a quick glance for a minute until I got a quick thought of the first animal that popped into my head which as a Squid which always reminded me of those old stories and legends about a group of sailors who a few seem to have encountered a giant creature from the sea that they have stumbled upon where they have seen like a giant squid or even a sea monster of some sort and that has been seen out in the dark and quiet waters. When I though of moving water, I instantly thought about impressionism and their movement, mainly Monet's artwork. Thats what inspired me to do the water movement. Then the block print itself is mainly carving which has also reminded me about Kathy Kollwitz's carving during the German Expressionism period. With these two factors put together, this is the start of my project. Kathy Kollwitz and Monet These two artists were both from two different art movements as Kollwitz was from German Expressionism while Monet was from Impressionism movement. These two had a major impact upon the mix between two movements which are clearly present among my artwork. Additional Information Kathy Kollwitz Monet |

Planning Sketches
With the squid thought still in my head I then soon started working on my planning sketches which were the basic outlines of my drawing. First off I began practicing sketching the basic details of an Octopus and a Squid which was the head, the tentacles, and the overall shape itself, next I had to take all the things which I had learned so far and include them to my final sketch. Then lastly I took all the pieces made the final form of drawing and used the lead-transfer method to get the drawing on to the tablet in which i was going to carve out of. Sketch #1 & Sketch #2 gave me the basic idea, also Sketch #1 seemed very basic or lacking any sort of challenge in my opinion. And Sketch #2 was a returning sketch from my digital that I was planning to reuse to help me but then again it was starting to get get challenging and this my love for mysterious beingings made me aim toward Sketch #3 which was the squid. |

Carving Process/Experimentation
During this phase or process I was trying my best to experiment with my details and have a rough yet seemingly textured style of German Expressionism. All was going well until I soon realized that I had covered the eye of the octopus/squid like creature. So I took a brief moment to soon come up with a plan which was to determine if I should keep the rough texture and make it seem like a shadow, or just outline it. My final decision was to keep experimenting with the rough texture and try my best to make it turn out well, in which it did. The next problem I had to face was the lack of space used during the carving. I then soon decided that its better if I used and try to recreate the water which was seen on Monet's piece. So I soon did so make sure the entire board space was used so I can cover the whole print. Even though its not much of water like texture, it was still a mini experiment which involved me trying to make an change in my artwork compared to my sketch. |
ReflectionOverall I have decided that I clearly did a great job towards this piece and as well as completed the certain aspects and style on how I wanted to create my artwork. Even though I had a few things that were not intended to be, and stumbled a few problems with. I had soon realized that its much more clearer compared to what I had in mind originally which made the art piece a lot more cleaner and much more better.

Printing Process
During this part of the process I have decided to complete and start my many attempts of my block print. During the first attempt of my project I had to decide how much ink am I going to put into this without causing any bleeding or anything else. During my first attempt I have soon realized that I had placed a small amount of ink. Even though this was a mistake, it seemed really cool to look at because during the process and inspiration. I have mentioned a few times on how I wanted to have a low quality feeling almost like a fuzzy photograph which was really shown a lot with lack of contrast. MeaningThe overall meaning of this piece mainly reflects upon how and when I was younger, I was really into mysterious things almost like urban myths of sea monsters that people "saw" when they traveled out into the sea, or the people who scream all over the news about how they saw "Bigfoot" when they were hiking out in the woods, but the media did not believe them and thought they have mental problems, or they are some crazy people.

ACT Responses
Clearly explain how you are able to identify the cause-effect relationships between your inspiration and its effect upon your artwork?
During the course of this project, my inspiration towards the impressionism, and german expressionism art piece is clearly show throughout this art piece, for example the water is mainly inspired from Monet's water in her paintings.
What is the overall approach (pov) the author (from research) has regarding the topic of your inspiration?
The main approach of this art piece was to show about the main aspects of dark, and terrifying nightmares, to calm, yet vivid visuals.
What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, cultures, etc. while you researched your inspiration?
Impressionism shows a lot a moment into this piece, while the other half of the piece is expressing a lot of German Expressionism which brings the darkness, and terrifying mood into this piece.
What was the central idea or theme around your inspirational research?
A lot of visuals from this piece was mainly taken from folktales, legends, and myths which were show a lot in this piece.
What kind of inferences did you make while reading your research?
A lot was mainly inferred through mysterious beings and as well as being curious when spoken towards other beings thus explaining the origins of folktales, myths, and legends.
