"The Stars in Our Skies"
Exhibition Text
The main design of the piece "The Stars in Our Skies" is mainly based off Van Gogh's The Starry Night which is made in the art movement impressionism. The way how Van Gogh sees colors is really what I am aiming for this art piece, when Van Gogh sees color as not just a simple solid color but many colors that create one color that fills the object. In this piece, I have created the same idea that Van Gogh had in color, then added a much more modern touch to his style to make the piece stand out overall in general.

Inspiration
Inspiration
The main inspiration to this piece was heavily inspired by one of Van Gogh's famous piece Starry Night. Starry Night is a post impressionist piece that is a much more of just a simplistic piece. What Van Gogh really wanted to show is the idea of not having a paint colored in a just a solid hue, but have it represent multiple colors in the painting. The idea behind all of this is exactly what I am recreating in my choice piece. |
Planning
Planning Sketches When I was deciding on how I was going to make this piece that is 2 centuries old into a much more modern piece. When it comes to think of modern place the first thing that I have came up with is cities and horizons. These two ideas where the initial stepping stones to my project. The sketches that I have made were set in place of the piece mainly focusing on the Starry Night design. The Starry Night design was meant to show the idea of how the sky isn't just a simple hue but it is made up of multiple hues and designs that make the flow of movement stick out into the piece attracting the viewer. That is exactly what I wanted to do in this piece. In the end I have distributed all the ideas in each of the sketches into the final painting. Experimentations What I wanted to do is learn how am I going to create the art style that Van Gogh did. I began painting the whole picture a solid color and began layering the colors. At first I wasn't satisfied with what I was making because I felt like my lines were too thick as well as have a ton of white which completely gets rid of the purpose of movement though out the piece thus lowering the quality. My solution to this problem was by adding more and more layers making it less and less of a lot of colors and more of a balance making it a lot more appealing compared to what it once was before. |
Process
When I first started on this piece, I wanted to figure out where I wanted to place my thing as well as set the foundation of my piece. So what I have done was create the basic solid color that is pretty much a sketch of what I wants to do and start working on it. After that I began layering the piece until it began moving on to the shape that made it seems satisfying and looks a lot more and more like Van Gogh's Starry Night. This was important to do because with out the idea I wouldn't be able to pull this Choice Piece out to what I originally want it to be. By executing every stroke that I wanted to do I was able to finish the top 1/3 of the piece. For the rest of the piece I painted the middle and bottom of the piece black and blue respectively where I made the city line and the water that defects the sky and the cities lights.
Reflection
Overall I have felt like I have done an amazing job to this piece and have executed the piece very well to what I was originally going to plan. This was the important idea because I wasn't originally going to think that this piece would come out as well as I planned out due to the lack of painting skills I had since the beginning of the year. But as I began painting more and more often I began learning new techniques that help make my strokes from my brush stick out and increase the overall quality of the piece which is the intended goal of mine when it comes to making paintings since I want to make a ton of paintings for the summer project, senior year, and for the portfolio. Although I could have made my strokes longer to make it seem more like Van Gogh's Starry Night as well as make the line seem a lot more simpler and cleaner I was overall proud for coming this far into my art ever since the beginning of the year.
ACT Questions
Clearly explain how you are able to identify the cause-effect relationships between your inspiration and its effect upon your artwork?
I was able to clearly explain this as an idea that may people didn't know when they make their paintings. When it comes to painting it's not just simply one to two hues but it's it's almost thousands and thousands.
What is the overall approach (pov) the author (from research) has regarding the topic of your inspiration?
The overall approach to this piece was to relate to Van Gogh's style that not many people appreciated when he was alive. Back then he wasn't the famous artist we know today since many of those people thought he was a mad man for believing that there are many colors and etc.
What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, cultures, etc. while you researched your inspiration?
The overall generalization that I have found in this piece is the culture that Van Gogh has brought into the world of art that we live in today. He was a major figure that has really pushed the art movement ahead of its time as they have pushed to the post Impressionism era.
What was the central idea or theme around your inspirational research?
The general idea of this piece is the beauty of the sky. The sky is in fact one of the most interesting things in my opinion especially at night. At night time we can see the other plannets and stars. These stars could possibly lead us to another galaxy as well as lead to possibly that there would be live somewhere else. The beauty of Space is what made this piece so interesting to me.
What kind of inferences did you make while reading your research?
The inferences that I have made was that Van Gogh was probably one of the best artist that has ever lived as many people have said before. His ideas, and passions are what made him such an amazing inspiration to May young artists around. His style is what really brough the meaning to his movements where his lines connected and made the viewers eyes follow that line.
